Vaidehi Sachin aka Cat Techi, a journalist’s journey would be launched tonight in a short while…

Cat Techie and her Journey...well there is so much to share and so much speak out. it was beautiful phase, with mixed experiences.

Now after so much of experience, I can say that I understand hackers in and out. Now I am well aware of their culture, mindset, every reaction, methods, tricks, and their focal area. When I was introduced to the hidden crust of cyber space, it was quite difficult for me and my team to deal with since we were very new to this domain. My team members are very young and since they possess quick leaning skill, it was very easy for me to train them with all the journalistic skills on political, crime and social beat. But, when it came to cyber space, we all were left puzzled.

We had no idea about where to hit and how to start. In addition to this, too much of dependency on one particular source dragged us in big mess. It was our mistake that we trusted a person who wasn’t matured enough and faithful. Today, things have transformed for me. Learning from all the mistakes made in the past, I have created myself in a very distinct manner where I am valued and respected. I have near about 5011 face book friends. I am glad to know that there are people who have dedicated pages in my name and moreover 3500 people have liked it. I could achieve this because I maintained space to interact with them and understand their psyche.

However, I started studying deeper about hackers. I was thrilled to see all young techies applying their brains in cyber expertise and aghast to see the planning of Gen next war. Hackers are Faceless, they love to live with anonymity and that’s the reason they bluntly expose others as the victim is not aware anything about the culprit. More over, I would really appreciate if these hackers dare to give their whereabouts before attacking some ones integrity. I am sure they will never unveil their identity because they need guts. In a way, they are toothless cowards. Their arguments and aggression know only the language of sabotaging and damaging other elements.

It’s a secret world with hidden, horrible faces on social networking site. Hackers love to live with power of destruction. They want to become famous by their handles (code name or fake name) and by maintaining secrecy of the original identity. There is no doubt most of the hackers are not only talented, but they are also expert in security. Irrespective of whether a hacker is big or small, generally they have their own website, face book account and twitter accounts too; they make their space over every available social networking sites. They love to be lauded while attacking someone. Since they are faceless and have got nothing to lose; they attack people who live with identity and name. I am sure if they have to reveal their identity, you will find them most abusive human beings on this earth. They do not represent their community in a strong manner. There are multiple groups, blogs, news portals where everyone tries to keep upper hand. At the same time, there is no integrity. Yet the biggest problem is that they are not accepted by large in society. Still there is taboo when you say hacker. Now after so much of experience, I can say that I understand hackers in and out. One thing I would like to mention here is that hackers are too much into blogging. Countless hackers maintain ten to fifteen blogs each. Their optimizing skills are amazing. They function in chain, one hacker can pass news to other hacker and in no time we may find news everywhere. These blogs are their tools to defame the enemy and or to publicize themselves. I have never seen such trained traits of blogging. Forums is another place where all these hackers discuss many things like latest hacking tools, queries, gossips and whose doing what.

Hey don’t stop here………….

Don’t forget to read “Cat Techie” only on www.cattechie.com , online launch is at 9pm..

Thanks……………………..

“Guide for Beginners” in hacking

For all my dear Kid friends

Every day I get minimum 15 inquiries about how to become Hacker, how to learn hacking and for that what should be done, where should search for content, and how should they go about it. Open source is available but finding exact content for beginners is little difficult because, they want to get in to the inexperienced zone without any basic knowledge. They are simply fascinated by hackers and want to be one like them.

I have gathered the required basic content from Google search engine, compiled it for you in sequence, and giving you the link below. Read it and try to understand the basics, after that if you have any query just ping me, whatever I have learned so far, let me share it with you, if I lack somewhere then we will learn it together and share the same with other too.

THis is How Attrition was Hacked

One fine morning Some “James Attrition” reached my inbox with some pastebin link, as usual the link was about plagiarism in the book and it was also about cautioning Indian hackers against me. Being a hacker he was caring for his community and warning them against me, anyways it dosent make any difference, but no issues.. It just hurts.

I have 5011 friends in my “Cattechie” FB account, and 3500 on my public profile, another 1500 in my “Catz” group. I have maximum enemies in friends list, if given a chance they might even cut me in to hundred peaces and erase my even remote existence. But few of them are my real fans, my kids, brothers and real friends too. With them I feel life is really blessed.

When this James started attacking me, some of my fans and friends went on abusing him, he also took them for ride by calling them Cat fake and so on, I have seen one common practice here, if someone strongly stands by me then people call that profile is my fake, and even if my fake comes and abuse me (though I don’t have) they will become fan of that abuser. Abusing me, being Cat critic and Cat enemy is fashion here, and that has become way of my life, I generally don’t visit others walls or groups, I have limited myself to my own group and wall. During these James Attrition days my fan Dnyaneshwar sent me message:

Hi di......i just wanna to tell u something that is......

if u have 3 fake FB accounts and id of victims u can hack the victims ac easily.... so think about responding ur friend request....and make ur ac secure.....i think u r well known about it...

Your biggest fan dnyaneshwar

my pleasure ...to guiding u di...

My eyes were wide open to his message, I was making plans of hack, and obviously none other than James Attrition .. But as you all know my condition ….hacking ..vacking mai kya janu re? a biggest noob in hackers community :P

I answered his message by asking him method of doing it..

He promptly replied saying

- First make three facebook accounts and add your slave (he must accept)

- then go to this fallowing link

http://www.facebook.com/recover.php/

There put the slave's email and fill the captcha then it will ask you to enter a new email where you put your email (not the one used on an existing account but a new one)

- it will then ask you the security question ( if you know it very well then just put it and the account is hacked )
But if you do not know the answer just keep entering random words until the limit is exceeded

- Once the limit is exceeded it will ask you to choose three trusted friends

There you put the three accounts you made and added your slave

- It will then send all three accounts the security code

And you go login all three and get the security code and just put it

- Hacked , enjoy now good night

This is how he explained me how to hack account, I was very much excited and went to Attrition’s account to see in log in mail and got very much upset because that was not visible. If you see Gaurav Singh’s wall, he made a post on June 25the at 7.29pm

i*********s@r*********.com guess :P

After few seconds one of his friend, answered there with proper email address.

That’s how the mission Attrition started, we fallowed all those instructions one by one and got stuck when we were asked to select three friends to receive recovery code for that account..

Except one, the two other friends were not known to me much.. But as I said it was team effort.

Finally we chose three guys and started chasing them, one was not in friends list of anyone of us, but his Cell number was on his profile, we called him and requested saying please friend help me with the code that you received to recover my hacked account, he went out of his way gave us access to his e mail and face account, same way even other friend gave us access to only Gmail but not to Face Book account, we changed his FB account Password and any how got second code, and third one was known to us so without making much fuss and queries he gave us the code..

To gather these codes we spent 23 hours and it was instruction from face book to get those codes and enter in 24 hours, my blood pressure went low, everyone was nerves but at eleventh hour, we filled that form and provided them Alternet email, recovery codes and everything..

We received message, “log on to account after24 hours with new email and password, those 24 hours was real tension.

We thought suppose if this attrition logs in, the whole efforts in vain. Second tension, if we get caught then he might tighten the security options and then there won’t be any chance… (See how little provocations make you do crime and you happily violet all rules and reach your target)

Exactly after 24 hours, I logged in and got access to his mail, my defacement page was ready, the 24 hours long waiting periods I was just planning all stupid thing to express my pain, grief, sorrow and anger..

Oh, my god..Finally I was in his account..

First changed all security options, and removed his post and all that the content which was hurting me..

We all were screaming and hauling like mad people.. Monitored all his activities, I really lost faith in humanity and especially this community… his inbox was flooded with all shit, everyone was trying to build relation with him , all were curious to know who he is? But this smart fellow, answered saying mail me, and add more friends to create awareness against her. All top guns of community were on task against me..

Hummm! mean but ok…chalta hai

One thing he forgot to remove during all this drama, his log in IP logs, which made me, reach the exact person, I tagged that defaced page to them, and as I perfectly guessed, he was the only one to give very filthy comment by abusing FUCK U CAT…

I can understand his aggression, I can even understand his frustration, he was flopped and I gave another name there CAT SLAVE.. That must have really pissed him,

All I can say Sorry, friend my intention was not to hurt you, I just wanted to solace myself from the pain of humiliations and abuses. You may call me Drama Queen as you have mentioned this on twitter also.

that time they bee lined at James profile with screen shots, links, and so on and now they are running towards attrition.org… 

I really feel powerful or sometimes a Big ghost, that so many people rushing to bang and fatak..

30 long hours on twitter, only one name and many master to abuse, Cat techie, Naidehi NBC and that is none other than me..

I vaidehi Sachin aka Cat Techi, most loved and hated creature here..

God bless you all with lots of happiness

Keep abusing, keep exposing,

As long as you all keep chanting my name I am Happy for you all

#OpIndia Favouring Pakistan?

We are aware of the flop show of operation India and the reason for taking this operation a bad shape is appalling but the sensational fact that came out is, Pakistan hackers always targeted India's top agency and sites. Now days they are just relaxing by being one of the member of #OpIndia and participating in the attacks if necessary. Many such websites are rooted by them in the name of #OpIndia mission. Earlier the focus of Indian hackers was to protest against such practices and there was control over Pakistan hackers by defacing their sites. Long back the peace deal was made to stop these attacks on each other’s countries and all of sudden there was breach of this peace treaty between these two countries. Recently a hacker called “ j4ckh4xor, ( I won’t disclose his full details )attacked Pakistan sites at wrong time and in reaction CBI was hacked. He is the hacker who hacked Appin’s website and many more, unfortunate incidences. This guy is working in a good ‘IT’ company and holding good profile. The way he randomly hacked these sites were not expected. He landed up displaying his immaturity and foolish presentation.

Cyber-attackers who identified themselves as the "Pakistan Cyber Army" have hacked the website of India's top police agency. The website of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) was hacked by programmers who left a message saying that the attack was in revenge for similar Indian assaults on Pakistani sites. The hackers signed their message on the Indian police website: "Long Live Pakistan."

Now the, #OpIndia operation has reduced the burden and tension of Pakistani hackers, because the task what they were executing, now Indians hackers have carried their legacy by attacking their own country websites. Shame on Indian hackers those promoting this kind of operation and asking skids to get involved in D-dos attacks, such as the recent attack on Indian army Website and NDTV website.

Earlier there was deterrence in outside country and enemy neighbors for hacking Indian sites, now they are thrilled with the operation India, the reason you fools are damaging your own country by full feeling their dreams what else you need? Don’t you think even the corruption in Pakistan is also on high end? Don’t you think even the hackers in Pakistan are capable of sending messages to their government? But still they will not involve in any such practices because they love their country and its cyber property in spite of all odds. They are the true patriots having head on shoulders. More over they are enjoying your foolishness, because you people are more than enough to cause damage to India and Indians. Sometimes I really doubt your credentials? Are you true Indian? Or a Pakistan mortgaged soul in India?

Our country is a democratic country and we have larger population than Pakistan, so the problems are quite serious. On entire globe almost every country has some or other internal challenges and issues. But this is the first ever odd example in Indian history that our own country hackers are damaging its online infrastructure. Looking at all this painful saga, I feel like saluting Pakistani hacker for their love and dedication towards their own country.

According to the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team, a government agency that tracks IT security issues, more than 3,600 Indian websites were hacked in the first six months of these After the Mumbai terror strikes, anti-India elements in Pakistan are now planning an attack on Indian computer networks, intelligence agencies have warned. Already Pakistani hackers are trying out a dry run against Indian networks through popular websites registered there after the Mumbai terror strikes.Every time the relations between the two countries dampen, Pakistanis start attacking Indian sites and Indian hackers attack Pakistan websites. But now India has big security challenge because this time the attack is not from Pakistan, it is from own Indian Hackers. If this continues then the group should change their names to “Indian Cyber Attackers” “Gundas Of Hindustan” “Indian cyber warfare” and rest Indian enemy Hackers other small groups.

Reason can be anything but answer is just one and that is …

Ruin Indian infrastructure in the name of Anonymous and challenge its own security.

Long live India, with such traitors.

anything off India,

No one for India

Investigative Journalists are soft targets

After J Dey’s death, silent moments, pain and tears and whispers are visible. 24 hours have already passed since Dey’s departure, yet the police are clueless about his death. Dey's funeral was an emotional farewell. So many questions around, so much of grief, insecurity, pain was in ambience. Shameless police and politicians marked their presence by facing media cameras but there was no hitch of regret on their face. Condolence messages kept pouring from media house to media house. There was competition in sending fax and smses to media. Finally, a journalist’s death too was encashed by these hypocrites for their own publicity. None of them is worried about the police and home department that is clueless about the crime. It was difficult to believe that their buddy left this world forever. He was shot from close distance and police are still clue less about the unknown assailants. How can this government and police department can just let go such issue? Now they think that journalists should be provided with security but what about the past? Who will compensate for J Dey’s death? A large number of media persons had turned up to pay their last respects to the senior journalist. Dey is survived by his wife Shubha Sharma and mother. Looking at his family I had experienced pain in my ribs. I started wondering that this could happen to my family too for bringing out the truth. A journalist is always a soft target.

In broad daylight city like Mumbai where we boast about better law and order, anyone can take anybody’s life and escape clueless. The Maharashtra government swung into action, ordering special police teams to probe Dey’s death. Will they be really investigating the issue? Do you thing can we ever get to know the real criminal? Despite being compared with Scotland Yard police, the Mumbai police continue to be clueless about the crime. State Home Minister R R Patil, Mumbai Police Commissioner Arup Patnaik, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Himanshu Roy, Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and order) Rajnish Seth and several senior government officers should be answerable for this incidence. Our dumb Chief Minister directed Patnaik to arrest the culprits involved in Mr Dey’s murder but where can the murderer be nabbed? He also has failed to mention whom to be held responsible for this case? Always an eye wash, god knows for how long?

J Dey had been receiving death threats and police were aware about it. How come Chief Minister failed to provide police protection for Dey? The government has provided security to Dey’s family at a time when it has lost it bread winner. It very unfortunate, the Home Minister could have acted and provided security to the crime journalist before he was gunned down. Now what is the use of plan for journalists' protection? Senior NCP leader and PWD Minister Chhagan Bhujbal said that it was very important to get the culprits behind bars. It’s true Mr Bhujbal but how can we put the accused behind bars? Just by giving mere political statements to media or by exercising your powers to really nab a culprit? How can you all ministers become so shameless to come in front of camera and still talk big. The manner in which bullets were pumped into Dey’s body, no law could have helped him at that time. The relevant department will look into it. But whatever happened is sad, bad.

The police, meanwhile, are examining the CCTV footage of Crisil House, which is located opposite the scene of the crime. The footage, though, isn't very clear because it was raining heavily at the time of the journalist's murder. So now is there any other way? Or any other excuse for media? The post-mortem report of Dey shows that five bullets were pumped into his body and one bullet that hit his shoulder did not come out. He died due to the bullet injury. Five bullets were pumped into his body and there was no noise? The attack on J Dey was undoubtedly an attack on the media. The police say they can’t establish a motive. Well, Dey had been covering the underworld for years; he’d written on the diesel mafia. Two leads for you, Commissioner Arup Patnaik. But we’re not surprised. The police force is flabby, too busy with rallies and subordinates’ cell phones. It, therefore, came as no surprise at all that in recent cases like the Kurar murders, the local officers did not even want to take down a complaint. Is the Mumbai police inept, poorly led, or just plain corrupt? Difficult to say.

J Dey was killed in a centrally-connected neighbourhood, in broad daylight and within walking distance of a police station. It adds up to one conclusion: in Mumbai, no one is safe. And when a citizen’s physical security cannot be guaranteed by the State, then that State has forfeited its right to govern. Bullet riddled bodies don’t make a crime reporter cringe. When I looked at J Day’s dead body I was scared, because all these days even I was doing investigative journalism, now also i am doing my reserch on Hackers, they do defametary blogging, they abuse and some times even make calls to me and threatn.

If you want to reach the fact and fight odd, then your destiny is death. It was an association that lasted right unto his death. Those were the years when J. Dey was still trying to find his footing in journalism. Enough is enough. Things need to get back on track, and we can start with the enactment of stringent provisions against those who attack the media. Or we can be one of those banana republics where dead journalists are commonplace.

Don’t spread rumors; we are Anonymous

Today I was really shocked to see one screen short floating over face book, mentioning some statements released by “Anonymous” that they are winding the #Op-India because of NBC and Cat. How can one release such statements? For some time if assumed one can understand about Cat, but why NBC? And the most important thing, can anyone really control over Anonymous? Wow I never knew I am so strong that I can halt a mission like #Op-India.

NBC is an independent news group which has got nothing do with any sort of activities here, just because you are exposed, you cannot drag my company in unwanted issues. I strongly support the original group of Anonymous, and always against the fakes posing as Anons and sabotaging my country.

In the recent past the news about Anonymous attack on Indian army website hit headlines, every one of this country was misguided. Overnight all hacker and common man of this country started hating this group because of rumors spread about them. Anonymous has made common cause in India with an anti-corruption movement.website of the National Informatics Center (NIC)was hacked by Anonymous but they never attacked Army and Indian Registrar. These were simply misused by Indian hackers. And these fake Indian hackers are planning to target Congress website under the cover of Anonymous’.

Operation India page on Facebook, was criticized by a number of users after the announcement that they hacked Indian army's site. Face book users were fuming with the thought that Anonymous attacked Indian Army. Why Anonymous should damage these sites to convey their message? This news was published on “The Hackers News” and then it reached everywhere, how come hacker’s news was so sure about the hack is by Anonymous?

The fact is that Anonymous never attacked defense sites. #OpIndia, started with great cause to fight against corruption, voice for common man and fight for media’s freedom. Looking at the popularity of this group and their good work, I always thought that after some time. Many small hackers groups may join them and emerge as one of the strongest hackers group on the Globe. That day each country will have unseen watch dogs over corrupt government to control their activities and raise voice for common man. But I was wrong. Group of Indian hackers in the power greed and with malicious intentions, started attacking their own country websites in the name of Anonymous. These Indian hackers hacked our Army websites, private institutions, media group, and an individual. They were randomly attacking everyone in the name of anonymous. Irony is that these Indian hackers made biggest mistake of making wrong deface page with email id. Few things which drawn the attention of Anon and #OpIndia because Indian hackers made some blunders like giving the email id anonymous_indian@hushmail.me, not only this they even changed the signature of the Anon, which was really lame .. The Anon signature is “We are Legion. We do not forget. We do not forgive. Expect US” these guys failed to make a proper statement and the language was so funny that everyone on #OpIndia was laughing on THN guys.

Unfortunately few Indian guys and the team of “The Hackers news” started conducting many activities by using the name of Anonymous. They did this for their personal profit, not for the noble cause which they ware pretending to be. In short time those Hackers fooled some innocent Indians. In short they got bad name to #OpIndia. Finally there was fake declaration about the closer of such Nobel mission.

One of my facebook friend of Anonymous group” Weare Legion’ told me that “we are anonymous, we are peaceful, anyone promoting or using violence is not anonymous and has been sent to give Anonymous a bad name in the press, our goal is freedom and peace for all, if you agree then you too are anonymous. (Indeed this was better way of living with ethics) who gave these Indian hackers freedom to attack our own country websites? Why Anonymous is quite, in spite of so much mess created in their name? Why are they not showing these hackers their place?

Today when I was discussing few things with Imnull0 (hacker of Anonymous group) and he gave me big shock by emphasizing over the facts. He told me that some bloggers and especially “The Hackers News” played dirty role in spreading all wrong messages and fake news on behalf of them without their consent. When Anon got to know the facts that THN is spreading false news including on FB, Twitter and his blog they decided to take the call.

THN was badly insulted by the Anon at IRC and he ( Mohit Kumar Vashisht) was asked to accept his mistakes and correct them by removing all the false claims and statements that he has have released in the name of Anonymous. They also made it very clear that they were never involved in the hacks carried out in India in the name of Anonymous; some of the hacks are Indian army website, NIC website, Rahul Gandhis website. Now they are at the verge of hacking Congress websites by same modus operands. These attacks are carried out by none other than the group of this so called news blogger and it’s very much possible that there can be involvement of some other hackers groups too.

Anonymous has warned them not to make any statement and carry out any attacks by the name of #OpIndia without consulting the others who are in #OpIndia, they have even told them in clear words that not to make any pages on FB or any other social networking site. Anonymous also realized that the allegations made on Cattechie, NBC and others are nothing but a false plot to divert the attention and settle their personal rivalry. Shame on THN and those supporting such groups, they are playing such dirty politics against a journalist just because she has the guts to raise her voice against injustice and trying to stop these fake people crossing their limits.

Well now my question is that, what should be done with “The hackers News”? And the hackers group working with them for hacking Indian websites? They are the traitors and threat to our country. Long back some one wrote about him stating that he is a JIHADI, that time I felt very bad, but now I am realizing the fact. These guys are terrorists working against the nation. Not only that they are shame for the hackers community as they are ruining the name of Indian Patriotic hackers.

In my capacity I will always support #OpIndia crusade against corruption, and I am sure, at any cost this campaign will never halt, they will just walk their way keeping all odds aside. They are Anonymous, the revolutionaries and legends. They have ethics and they can, and you cannot stand by Nobel cause.

If you cannot support the cause, then just stay away, but at least don’t defame them by sabotaging their mission.

you have back stabbed them; now expect the unexpected.

They are Anonymous.

They are Legion.

They do not forgive.

They do not forget.

Expect them

NBC-Hacker5, Kaizen and Hackers

This post is dedicated to Indian l33t lamers & legends like them, who love to do moral policing, blot on my nation .....

Face book has one of the biggest community of hacker across the country, In India the term hacking and intentions are yet not very much clear and specific. Indian hackers lack unity and integrity. Hackers are divided in teams and small groups. 40 percent hackers are in the industry of producing hacker, I mean they are having their own seminars, classes, and certified courses. There are many hackers lured in unethical activities.

Certified Ethical Hacker’s certificates are bought and purchased. There is no control over these examinations and their authenticity is at stake. Many of them are working with IT sectors, and some of them totally dedicated to research, yet keeping there one foot in underground activities. Indian hackers are blessed with potentials, skills and self learning abilities. Only India has an average of skilled hackers between the age group of 14 to 17. At the age of 16 some of them even write their exploits, codes and scripts. These particular groups of hackers are form middle class or upper middle class families, they lack papers. They don’t have certificates to show but their skill can slam the claims of so called demigods of hacking community.

China, Korean and Us government already announced about their own cyber army, they train number of hackers at government expenses. Israeli and Africans hackers are known for their dedication and eccentric approach towards the cause. Each country globally has one or other national issue and the hackers of that particular country and dedicated to that cause and nation. They don’t harm their own country; they won’t become watch dogs for their own country. They are the loyal patriots and guards of their cyber space. Indian hackers lack patriotism, there are some small time group of hacker claims to be patriotic hacking community, but their patriotism is limited to the defacement of Pakistanis websites. They just deface randomly and leave their message for Pakistan and its hackers. Most of the time these messages are nasty and not worth reading. If this young generation of hackers given an opportunity and freedom I am sure the cyber space may come under secure zone.

Chennai, Bangalore ,Bombay ,Pune and Delhi are the den of hackers. Either they are working with private firms, or seeking education. Day time they are committed to their routine but at night they become cyber terrorists. The ethics are vanished, the focus is lost, and some of the groups even became scavengers and attacking Indian sites to set personal scores. They are attacking private firms and individuals for revenge, fame and publicity. Neither they are loyal to security industry not to hacking passion. This is the biggest dilemma of Indian hackers.

In the recent past few groups are stuck in identity crises, few old times group got in rivalry and others lost in the glory of other side. Youth of this country learning hacking through open source and Google, they use available exploits to hack their own country’s resources and properties; there are hundreds of forums and news bulletins and blogs, providing open tools, scripts and exploits. All this material is most of the time used on Indian servers. It’s high time we need to declare theses forums and communities as anti-national, they are traitors and threat to our cyber space. Laws are stringent but hardly applied; there is no watch over such practices. Cyber cell across the country lacks latest updates. The staff is old and every day updates are beyond their reach. Other than the power of law and order they possess no such extra ordinary skills to nail down such open sources.

There are number of good hackers working in call centers, some in cyber cafés and some in low profile organization, and many land up becoming instructor in Hacking classes. If we go by statistics India produces on an average thousands of hackers in the period of three months. If you go by annual production then I can say it will reach in hundred thousand. Appin, Inobuzz, tech defense, whagela’s and fadia’s are lured in this industry of producing hackers, the irony is that these hackers have no jobs, opportunities and end of the day India still has challenge over cyber security issues.

Instead of crying over issues we thought of resolving problems in our capacity by providing jobs to, skillful hackers lacking papers, gave them a publication Hacker5 as mouth piece, unfortunately our concern was misunderstood and we became victim of illicit hackers and their traits. At the end I am proud to say this magazine is reaching in remote areas, where two hours electricity is a biggest challenge. These students have no open source to acquire knowledge. There are n numbers of young students, got platform to reach readers. Complimentary copies of Hacker5 reach 17 such villages where education and resource is biggest challenge. All over Mumbai library its reaches free. There are so many students request us for free copy, because they can’t afford it. I think minimum 200 hackers in this community will agree to what I said.

We have number of TV channels, news available on websites, but still crave for print (news paper). Just because open source of learning is available for those who can avail these services we cannot neglect 40% that Indian population still underprivileged for electricity, education, and finance. If you have hundred rupees to waste then you are not my buyer. If you invest hundred rupees to make this cause reach in remote places they you are my buyer.

Let them be privileged with your support

the only profit is smile on their face and support to live with dignity..

I never wanted to disclose this, because charity is never disclosed, we have our NGO “Aadhar”, I don’t believe in taking funds and donations from other to do my part of duty. I am born as human on this mother earth, and giving back to our society in own capacity is my own moral duty. We donate 30 % of our business profits to Aadhar. So that the needy and help less can live with dignity and care.

Oh! One more thing, if at all you all would want to visit our new family of physically disabled 500 members at, Jai Mumbai viklang santha, Dr babasaheb ambedkar nagar, Meeraa road east..You are welcome. These families are supported by NBC my organization. The young kids getting education, youth employed at our company in their own capacity. Distress woman and old people are provided with possible best facilities. I don’t know whether you are aware or not our NBC family members are between the age group of 19 to 30. We all need to go long way, we just started our journey.

I don’t know about other hackers, but I am proud to say r45c4l,ch0ta, Kai Farmer, Doper, Sid Shenvi are definitely the reason for making above person’s life worth living, and he is none other than OUR family member, Imran Mullah.

UNDERGrown HACKERs

Today morning I was reading post by some so called underground hacker ;( I don’t know why they are called underground when they are very well living on this earth and that to enjoying the daylight, food, woman, wine and perhaps wealth. They may not be even aware what is burning under their buttocks. But yes they decide the good, bad and ugly. I am sure if they stand in front of mirror and look at their frustrated face they will for sure hate themselves JAnyways the post was about Ankit Fadia, his books and my blog and how the content was taken from different sources. Poor guys, god knows what they are trying to show, but let me tell you one thing here, whatever we speak, write, or vision for, is definitely a creation or expression of someone on this earth. Even you, your birth, your existence is out of some one. What are original are the additions to the existing content of subject.

Today I am writing this tomorrow someone may have some different expressions on this article and if she or he modifies it then what is wrong in it? More over who the hell are you to decide right or wrong. You will be remaining anonymous in dark world with your evil intentions but how does it make difference to Ankit Fadia’s life or my life or any one for that matter? They all are achievers, they succeeded in their life, they are happy and acknowledged by people. For me controversy is boon. I and controversy go hand in hand. If there is no controversy, people think I am dead. There are many such successful and popular people amongst us, they are widely abused, hated, and attacked by critics. We the Indians living in democratic country, always misuse our freedom of speech and expressions. We want our country to progress and go ahead but at the same time we are jealous of others growth, success and popularity so much so we go to any extent to tarnish some ones image by taking undue advantage of our freedom. We start taking things in our hand to decide fate of other person. Why?

Actually empty vassals make lods of noise.

the new tracking systemroughly

By eMinds Legal
A new online tracking system will allow websites to pinpoint your location to within a few hundred metres, without your permission. Internet sites will be able to work out where users are within an average of 690 metres, using information about their internet connection. At the moment they can only track users’ locations to within a radius of about 200 km, but the new technique will narrow this down to as little as 100 metres.
The new system, which has been designed by American and Chinese researchers, compares the time it takes to send data to computers to the time it takes to send to computers it knows the location of using Google Maps.To locate computers to this accuracy has previously required people to agree to share location, but the new system does not need any particular software on the computer to work or even the user’s permission.
Yong Wang, one of the researchers who designed the method, said: “This is a client-independent method. The client does not need to approve anything.”Delineated by the American and Chinese researchers, the new tracking systemroughly evaluates the whereabouts of the user. They track down the browsers by locating the closet landmark, including schools and universities, to them
While the new tracking system might be a threat for the privacy of the iPhone and other users, it has come as an advantage for the advertisers.Through the help of this technology, the scientists can now locate the user and advertise about the products, services and shops, located nearest to them.

133t anti- Indian h4x0rs

SOME SO Called 133t Indian h4x0rs I pity on you, please learn to draft proper messages, you are the biggest anti Indian group and sabotaging our nation. I understand your publicity greed but no use. I don’t think media would be ever interested in such group. Two guys in this so called team are from Gujarat, one prominent hacker from Hyderabad, one from my own Mumbai and one from Rajasthan. Unfortunately they are none other than the old so called patriotic group of our country.

The group is hey wire and shattered, their identity is attacked and many of the group members lured in criminal activities. They all are between the age group of 19 to 22. They are spoiled brats and ideal minds. The Hyderabad fellow hacker is quite sharp and cunning, but the guy from Rajasthan is really sharp ( I really admire these Gujrat and Rajasthan Guy). They from middle class families and doing small time jobs. Some of them are yet to finish their education. The reason behind defacing Indian sites is nothing but gaining popularity and to remain in news. Create deter in hacking world and also make their name famous.

Indian officials are under fire for the security lapse that allowed the terror siege to occur in our country. So many times Javan gets killed and police get attacked. Intelligence fail, government flops and we innocent people get owned by terrorists, that does not mean, crime and criminals are role models. The destroyers have no nationality or religion, they are just scavengers born to frustrated souls..And blot on our own country. Security lapse (=a temporary failure in arrangements for any safety). In 26/11 some terrorists made entry in Taj and the hotel was totally destroyed and it is considered a very serious security lapse and it is one of the deadliest attacks in the history of India. The attackers took advantage of security laps and got in that does not mean they are the heroes. They are attackers, criminals and terrorists, they scan your security with illicit intentions, their main object is to attack and damage. They are not bothered about who’s who!! It’s their mentality and upbringing. Whenever a hacker hack a site or defaces the same, they leave message questioning your security potentials.

Today I was reading one message on one such defaced site, “Stop Eating Our Money. Yea you heard it right OUR fucking Money”. Here I want to ask what is the meaning of “Fucking Money”? It really fucks or you earn out of it? Guys no one is forcing you to pay on gun point, it’s you who wish to pay for your own wants and desires. More over the worth appreciating fact is that they themselves already published on their site that, “We need to understand that there is no real guarantee for a job and also there is no replacement for hard work. Guarantee is a misnomer and merely a sales technique. We have 64.1%* placement record so far. Appin certified professionals are working in top companies. We offer 100% assurance of our assistance in finding you the best job. Students have come to our institute to take training after they were dissatisfied from the so called 100% Job Guarantee institutes. All Appin certified job seekers can send across there resume at placement@appinonline.com. Company have different openings across various domains and currently hiring for national and international hiring”.

they are very much vocal and clear in what they are doing. Khare is a business man like any other schools in our country where education is sold and purchased, we pay heavy money to possess a certificate, many underprivileged in spite of having knowledge and wisdom deprived of education in India. Big money big education that’s how it is. Can you stop all of them?

Then the message continued with “Stop Boasting about shit things and fooling our government atleast from now on work for the nation in a true way in a Real way”.

Whatever it is, one thing is sure. Appin is paying income tax in time, they have not produced any terrorists, neither are they indulged in any antinational activities. They are simply doing their business and expanded it larger than life. Hundreds of people are earning their living from them. They have empowered thousands of young youth of this country. If suppose, Appin closes its business, then are you going to provide their employees a living? When you cannot be provider then you have no right to snatch their living. Our government can’t be fooled, please have at least faith in them. Work for nation means what? They should start defacing sites and harasses people in the name of country? Yes This Country Gave You Everything And What You Did Till Now?? The same question I would like to ask these defacers. Change Your Mind set. Don’t behave antinational and trouble your own country people.

Learn Some Real Shit Other Then Outdated Methods and Backdoored Tools of Monotones way of defacing. Why to leave logs and ask someone to find you? If at all you are true Indian and bunch of men then come forward and face the world, have guts to show your faces and say it’s me. But I know you cowards have no guts. We know that you are Not The Masters, you Are Not The Blasters, Neither you are of Any Corporate Level IT Experts but We are More Greater Then That We are..

The virtual girlfriend: Fantasy or nightmare?

>A sampling of virtual girlfriends

Meet the next virtual girlfriend: The announcement of Cloud Girlfriend, an app designed to publicly flirt with users on Facebook, has had tech bloggers in a tizzy for nearly a month. Now that it has an official release date (April 06) and a cost (free), it's due time for us to take a closer look at "her" and, more important, what the fantasy of a virtual girlfriend says about us.

David Fuhriman, CEO of Cloud Girlfriend, says the product isn't just about entertainment and escapism; he sees it as a training ground for relationships: "Like the saying goes, 'Practice makes perfect.' [It] can help people come together and practice managing a real relationship -- and then take it into the real world." You know, like a Tamagotchi is to pet ownership, a virtual girlfriend is to dating. OK, so that might seem a dubious claim -- real-life interactions are an entirely different beast from status updates and "pokes" -- but these days so much of even our real-world relationships are managed virtually. As Fuhriman points out, a relationship with Cloud Girlfriend is like the increasingly common long-distance relationship (minus the Skype sex). This all brings to mind an article I read the other day about virtual therapy, where the patient talks out his or her problems with a sophisticated avatar capable of mirroring body language, engaging in basic conversation and, most important, asking a series of probing questions. Therapists are also using virtual simulations to help patients through social phobias.

It isn't just the potential entertainment or therapeutic value that has people wound up over Cloud Girlfriend. After all, the Web is already full of virtual girlfriends. There are iPhone apps and interactive games of all flavors. That's not to mention the phenomenon of Love Plus, a game for Nintendo DS that allows players to maintain a relationship with, creepily, young teenage characters. The game is so popular in Japan that a resort town dreamed up a special vacation package for fans to have a romantic getaway with their pixelated lovers. The game also led to the first marriage between a man and a virtual woman. And then there's the most popular virtual lady of all: free Internet porn.

What makes Cloud Girlfriend different and, apparently, more enticing is the potential to convincingly present oneself as something you're not: a stud with a pretty, doting girlfriend. The appeal isn't limited to those capable of deriving satisfaction from interacting with an avatar; a virtual Facebook girlfriend is, as with most things on the social network, largely about self-presentation. In addition to public online flirtations -- which are meant to make the bachelor look more appealing to potential partners -- Fuhriman is working on developing software that allows users to superimpose their image on a photo of their fake ladyfriend. It might seem too good to be true: Some suspected it was an April Fool's joke since it was announced in late March; others pointed out that Facebook's terms of service ban profiles generated by bots. But Fuhriman explained that real women will be managing the profiles and taking responsible for the digital flirtations. However, he insists that it "is not a sex chat or pornography service." That raises the question: Why not just do it yourself -- create a fake Facebook profile for your dream girl and then fabricate interactions on your real profile?

The thing is, I suspect the buzz over Cloud Girlfriend has less to do with the app's actual utility and far more to do with the desire, and fear, that it taps into. We're more connected, and yet more isolated, than ever. The hyped future-is-now remedies for carnal loneliness -- like sex robots and teledildonics -- have inspired disappointment, and often repulsion. This is a time of fantasy fulfillment and disenchantment -- and what represents that better than a lover who is real to everyone except oneself.

Cattechie aka Vaidehi Sachin again in news for the hackers,by the hackers of the hackers

The server got hacked at 6.18 precisely in the morning, the attack was going on continuously from last 3 days and it’s still going on. They were doing bruteforce attack after they failed in DDoS, they were trying all over the places they can do it, they tried it on WHM panel, Cpanel of all the domains, FTP accounts, emails of some of the mail accounts specially feedback@sabkileak.com , it looks like somehow their main target was http://www.sabkileak.com/

ICW, indishell, ICA,DNA, stuxnet, all hacking shit we can knock your doors anytime”. What a shit is this? Why you need to knock the door, if you have guts please come in the doors are open. We may have some differences with our aims and goals but when someone offends us we should be united as one... and this heinous attack should not be tolerated at any cost. Long back “khujli chodary” issued one PDF warning to all hackers for not using particular name for defacement and on that page similar warning was issued. Khujli tried his level best to bend all hacker but fortunately they gave dame to his intentions. More over what I feel is, the main motto behind this hack was not to give a message to icw, ica, indishell, dna, ics etc., it was done by someone who hates our success... we are working to find out, my guys are back to me and they will dig the ground till they reach and find out the evil punks hiding in underground hell. Any ways I never ever came across such stupid underground group.

Cybercriminals are spreading invisible infections far and wide across the Internet by hammering hundreds of thousands of websites. SabkiLeak website based on the lines of WikiLeaks which is to be launched on 1st May, 2011 was apparently compromised by a group of hackers called Fake ICA seeming to be registered in New Delhi. Assisting Fake ICA is its owner’s girlfriend who was once known as the slaughter house for anti-Indian and anti-Hindu worms and the power House of Hindus. But, later she was caught providing information to the Pakistani counterpart and hence was boycotted by hackers hacked the website using Brute force .

The intentions behind the attack from the rivalries appear to be an outcome of sheer envy or the fear of getting their corruption practices exposed. It is also not so skeptical that the hacker group must be hired by some government officers for the attack. Despite the fact that they have tried their best to interrupt the path of SabkiLeak, the website authorities assures to launch it on the scheduled date itself. On the contrary, the attack has only made the website owners gain more confidence and simultaneously get a wider exposure. The whole incidence has only left the ignorant hackers and authorities behind the attack bang their heads against empty pots. In a way, the attack has proved to be a training session for the Kaizen wannabees and its technical staff under the leadership of R45C4l to fight against this kind of attacks on organizations, business groups or any part of the IT sector. Since SabkiLeak is only a virtual media and nothing related to print and paper, there was not any loss in actual. Although the server was down for few hours, the problem is believed to be solved soon.

one of the close source said getting root is not big issue, The guys who did it is against r45c4l, the source said that they are from inj3ct0r and 1 of them managed to steal openSSH 0-day which was written by anti-sec (romeo)... guys are from USA... (Indians in USA).... openssh 0-day is INEVITABLE! 99.99% of the servers are vulnerable to it...!!! someday try to research on milw0rm and threat to milw0rm by anti-sec coz of openssh 0-day its a mastercard which has to be broken somehow!anyways it want make difference because my virtual existence is not much as compare to print.

Hackers had left a message after defacing the website which said there is no point wasting time on defacing Pakistani websites forming small groups. It is essential to form a united group which will help the nation to be cyber secured. Defacing sites of organizations like CBI or PM office is not a great thing as it can be done by any hacker. Responding to the attack, SabkiLeak said that these kinds of attacks are not going to stop it from achieving its motive and also that the website will be launched on 1st May itself standing true to its promises. To be precise, the attack was a message to hackers group like ICW, Indishell, ICA, DNA-stuxnet, ICS and many other ethical hacking groups claiming to be the best. Lately, Cattechie having the same vision had tried bringing all these groups together under one roof ‘Unite Hackers’ for a better prospect of the country but due to some miscreants the attempt received a setback.

Hey guys I really felt like laughing at the defaced page. Those guys are watching every strange thing… hey what this mean? Anyways I am happy; my websites became message board for the entire hackers group other than “khujli” group. Not a big problem... attention creator shower off your ass. So silly and amateur attack, any ways thanks for this hack. All my lost brothers got united once again. This was worth.
Any ways guys I feel this attack was not against me but it’s a open challenge to all groups lets unite and show we may be separated by groups but once challenged we r united... GoodLuck

Hacker5 to conduct security seminar for all hackers, students and corporate sectors- special lectures by Rascal,Javed and cattechie

securing India (Awareness Workshop on ethical hacking and Information security)

Our basic concern is to aware our Young generation from upcoming online threats to move towards secure India by empowering our country through education medium lets be unite and tell our enemy countries we are Indian's not a easy bolt to crack

The most popular information security and hacking training would go in-depth into the techniques used by malicious, black hat hackers and the dangers they pose. While these hacking skills can be used for malicious purposes, this class would teach how to use the same hacking techniques to perform a white-hat, ethical hack, on one’s organizations. One would leave with the ability to quantitatively assess and measure threats to information assets; and discover where his organization is most vulnerable to hacking in this network security training course. The goal of this seminar is to help one master a repeatable, documentable penetration testing methodology that can be used in an ethical penetration testing or hacking situation. This ethical security training course has a significant Return on Investment as you gain knowledge of ethical hacking and walk out with skills that are highly in demand in today’s digital world.Nowadays with the increased advancement of technology, cyber threats too have taken a modern form. At one side where computers have made our day to day lives easier and faster, on the other hand it has also become a tool to many people for committing various criminal activities.

why should it required ?

We believe that next world war is not fight by arms or atom bombs its cyberwar result may be drawn our country 20 years back. So we are preparing our country for securing them self

Another big issue of our country is employment there is huge gape between a good education and employment all courses are so much theoretical that cant fill the requirement of upcoming industry need we design a very good syllabus to reduce the gap between eduction and employment as much is possible

Phishing scams in India and legal provisions

“phishing, noun, the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers, online.”

SUPPOSE, ONE day you open your email, and find a weird looking mail from your bank, beware, it could be something phishy! A message in your inbox from your bank with which you have an internet enabled account asking to update your account with your personal information, login detail, etc., on the pretext of upgradation of server of the bank, should not be opened. You would also see a link, by clicking on which you would be linked to a look alike website of your bank, which looks quite authentic and convincing. However, you may be smart enough to know that this is a trap by a con to get your vital personal information to make fraudulent financial transactions and swindle your money. But there are many others who are not as smart as you, and fall into the trap and pass on their vital login details and lose their valuable money.

Phishing is an internet-age crime, born out of the technological advances in internet age. “Phishing" is a newer form of social engineering. Typically, Phishing is a form of social engineering, characterised by attempts to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as passwords, usernames, login IDs, ATM PINs and credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy person or business in an apparently official electronic communication, such as an email or an instant message.

The phishing attacks will then direct the recipient to a web page (mirror webpage) so exactly designed to look as a impersonated organization’s (often bank & financial institution) own website and then they cleverly harvest the user's personal information, often leaving the victim unaware of the attack.Phishing has become so rampant that even the Oxford English Dictionary added “Phishing” to its latest publication making it a definitive word of English Language.

It defines “Phishing” as:

As per the American Banker’s Association “Phishing attacks use 'spoofed' e-mails and fraudulent Web sites designed to fool recipients into divulging personal financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames and passwords, Social Security numbers, etc. By hijacking the trusted brands of well-known banks, online retailers and credit card companies, phishers are able to convince up to 5 percent of recipients to respond to them.”

The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG), which is an industry association focused on eliminating identity theft and fraud from the growing problem of phishing and email spoofing defines Phishing as a form of online identity theft that employs both social engineering and technical subterfuge to steal consumers' personal identity data and financial account credentials. According to the Annual Report of the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In), Deptt. of Information Technology, Ministry of Communications & Information Technology, (Govt. of India) in the year 2009, the CERT-In handled about 374 phishing incidents.

Major factors for increase in Phishing Attacks:

There are three major factors behind the recent spurt in phishing attacks worldwide particularly in India: Lack of awareness among public: Worldwide, particularly in India, there has been lack of awareness regarding the phishing attacks among the common masses. The users are unaware that their personal information is actively being targeted by criminals and they do not take proper precautions when they conduct online activities.Lack of awareness about policy – The fraudsters often count on victim’s unawareness of Bank/financial institution policies and procedures for contacting customers, particularly for issues relating to account maintenance and fraud investigation. Customers unaware of the policies of an online transaction are likely to be more susceptible to the social engineering aspect of a phishing scam, regardless of technical sophistication.Technical sophistication – Fraudsters are now using advanced technology that has been successfully used for activities such as spam, distributed denial of service (DDoS), and electronic surveillance. Even as customers are becoming aware of phishing, criminals are developing techniques to counter this awareness. These techniques include URL obfuscation to make phishing emails and web sites appear more legitimate, and exploitation of vulnerabilities in web browsers that allow the download and execution of malicious code from a hostile web site.

Techniques of Phishing attacks Man-in-the-middle attacks: In this class of attack, the attacker sits between the customer and the real web-based application, and proxies all communications between the systems. This form of attack is successful for both HTTP and HTTPS communications. The customer connects to the attackers server as if it was the real site, while the attackers server makes a simultaneous connection to the real site. The attackers server then proxies all communications between the customer and the real web-based application server – typically in real-time.

URL Obfuscation Attacks: Using URL obfuscation techniques which involves minor changes to the URL, the fraudster tricks the user to follow a hyperlink (URL) to the attacker's server, without the users realizing that he has been duped. URL Obfuscation uses the unspoken, unwritten secrets of the TCP/IP protocol to trick users into viewing a website that they did not intend to visit.

XSS (Cross-site Scripting): Cross-site scripting attacks (XSS) make use of custom URL or code injection into a valid web-based application URL or imbedded data field. In general, these XSS techniques are the result of failure of a site to validate user input before returning it to the client’s web-browser.

Phishing scenario in XSS:

•Victim logs into a web site

•Attacker has spread “mines” using an XSS vulnerability

•Victim fall upon an XSS mine

•Victim gets a message saying that their session has terminated, and they have to to authenticate again

•Victim’s username and password are send to attacker

(To be continued)

Kaizen, me and my dream project

The very first question people ask us is “What is the meaning of Kaizen ?” .

Well when we were planning to start the organization, we had several issues in our mind. Kaizen is a upcoming Information Security Company, which we are going to start with like minded people who are dedicated and passionate and having a vast amount of experience in the Info-Sec domain, and who understands the importance and necessity of Info-Sec in the present world scenario.

Kaizen is actually a Japanese word, Kaizen is a philosophy or you can say its a practice that focus upon continuous improvement of processes in manufacturing, engineering, supporting business process, and management. It has been applied in a lot of fields from healthcare to physiotherapy, from life-coaching to banking and government and many other industries.

One of the most important reason behind starting Kaizen is that we are very disappointed by looking at the way most Info-Sec consulting companies are providing services and solutions to Corporate, government organizations and various other small - big organizations. Most of the time the people are not at all aware of the actual security threats and mind sets of cyber criminals who are dedicated to break in to your system and networks.

We have a very dedicated and highly experienced team and we have many ideas and proposals to offer which none of the security companies are offering. We are going to give the best solution and security practice.
Another most important reason behind starting up this company is providing every possible help to our government agencies and bureaus to fight against these cyber criminals and highly sophisticated cyber terrorists who are a big threat to the security of our country.

Kaizen and Hacker5 were a dream project and it was a ambitious project too with just one thing in the mind and it was “providing a platform to the fresher’s and young talent hackers who are doing extremely good in “Hacking (in its real sence) “ but they were getting misguided or not getting an opportunity to make a recognization for themselves in the industry. Infosec is a very rigid domain and moreover the concept is very new here in India, most of the people are not at all familiar with what actually it is all about. Another big problem is that when these young guys talk about making a career in infosec, parents and relatives don’t really understand what actually it is all about and because of the ignorance and the way term “hacking or hackers” is abused by media, people think that this is something illegal or something related to criminal activities.

We started Hacker5 with just one aim, to provide a global platform to all these young and very talented people to contribute and show there work so that it can reach to various organizations, companies, security professionals and all the places where there work can be recognized and appreciated. All this would not have been possible without the support and encouragements of all our friends and well-wishers and those who believed in our dreams. The most important names I would like to mention is Vaidehi Sachin and NBC pvt ltd. The concept of Hacker5 is the brain child of Vaidehi and she started Hacker5 with the same reason and purpose for which we are coming up with Kaizen. When she came to know about Kaizen, she immediately showed her willingness to carry on the Kaizen project and gave us every possible help and support. The entire NBC team supported us in every possible way. They very well understand the value and importance of securing the data and the valuable customer information from any unauthorized person.

We can create this awareness and make people understand the importance of infosec not just by providing good service to them but also by making the common people capable enough to secure there assets, and this can be achieved by giving proper training to them. With this aim the hacker5 and Kaizen team is going to provide seminars and workshops at the educational as well as corporate level with the help of a very dedicated and talented team. The aim is to create awareness as well as help those who want to make a career in infosec. We will be working as well as providing solutions to various government and other law enforcement agencies too.

Hacker vs. Hacker

The hacking and public humiliation of cyber-security firm HBGary isn't just entertaining geek theater. It's a cautionary tale for businesses everywhere Greg Hoglund's nightmare began on Super Bowl Sunday. On Feb. 6 the high-tech entrepreneur was sitting in his home office, trying to get to the bottom of some unusual traffic he was seeing on the Internet. Two days earlier he'd noticed troubling activity hitting the website of HBGary Federal, the Sacramento startup he helped launch in 2009. He suspected some kind of hacker assault and had spent the weekend helping to shore up the company's systems. A few hours before Green Bay kicked off to Pittsburgh, Hoglund logged into his corporate account on Google (GOOG)—and confirmed his fears. He couldn't get in. Someone had changed the password and locked him out of his own e-mail system. Stolen passwords and hackers are facts of life in the Internet Age. Twitter, Facebook, MasterCard (MA), the Washington Post Co. (WPO), the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the U.S. State Dept., and countless other organizations large and small have had to deal with cyber-assaults. More often than not, the security hole is plugged and, if the victims are lucky, the plague abates. Not this time. HBGary Federal is a spinoff of Hoglund's HBGary Inc., a cyber-security firm that offers protection to corporations and governments from cyber-attack. Hoglund built his career on the business of hacker-proofing—getting hacked meant HBGary failed at the very thing it's paid to get right.

Hoglund called Google's corporate technical support to shut down the account, but a representative told him that doing so would take time. It didn't matter. Intruders were already helping themselves to tens of thousands of internal documents and e-mails, some of them personal exchanges between Hoglund and his wife, Penny Leavy, president of HBGary. Then the hackers—who turned out to be members of the anarchic cyber-guerrilla organization that calls itself Anonymous—triumphantly posted their electronic booty on an online file-sharing service for all the world to see. That's when Hoglund's real problems began, and the resulting controversy—involving a high-powered Washington (D.C.) law firm, the Justice Dept., and the whistle-blower site WikiLeaks—hasn't just been entertaining geek theater but a rare look into the esoteric realm of cyber-security. It's a world where only a select few understand the workings of the computers and networks we all use, where publicly antagonizing the wrong people can have disastrous consequences, and where some participants tend toward self-aggrandizement and flexible differentiations between right and wrong.

The HBGary Federal documents—to Hoglund's surprise, he says—revealed unethical and potentially criminal plans to build a digital-espionage-for-hire business. "They really showed how bad things are getting," says Bruce Schneier, a renowned computer security expert. "Blackmail, espionage, data theft. These are things that were proposed as reasonable things to do. And no one said, 'Are you crazy?' " The plans were conceived in part by HBGary Federal's top executive, a former U.S. Navy cryptologist named Aaron Barr. Barr was working in conjunction with two other security companies. In a bit of cloak-and-dagger grandiosity, the firms dubbed their collaboration Team Themis, after a titan of Greek mythology who embodied natural law. (Forsaking Themis brings on Nemesis.) Team Themis proposed to electronically infiltrate grass-roots organizations opposed to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the powerful Washington lobbying organization. In a separate and even more legally dubious proposal intended for Bank of America (BAC), the group laid out a plan to infiltrate WikiLeaks and intimidate its supporters.

Team Themis's machinations were exposed before they got past the proposal stage. But the schemes the security firms came up with were Nixonian in scope and Keystone Kops-like in execution. In a 12-page PDF sent to Hunton & Williams, the Washington law firm representing the U.S. Chamber, Team Themis suggested creating dummy documents and online personae, and scouring social networks such as Facebook for intelligence on their prospective client's most vocal critics. In the proposal for Bank of America, the security firms suggested hacking WikiLeaks itself to expose its sources. For Hoglund and his 30-person company, the fallout from the revelations continues to grow. Employees of HBGary and their families have been besieged with hostile phone calls and e-mails, including some death threats, and the company canceled its presentations at the annual RSA cyber-security conference in February. News sites that cover computer security have plumbed the document dump, turning HBGary and Barr into objects of ridicule. Barr resigned on Mar. 1 and declines to speak publicly about the ordeal. All of it makes Greg Hoglund furious. "These individuals are not hacktivists, they are criminals," he tells Bloomberg Businessweek, referring to his Anonymous adversaries. "If you let a gang of cyber-thugs hack into systems with impunity and get away with it, what kind of precedent does that set for cyber-security?"

Hoglund, 38, is widely respected in the computer security world for his expertise with "rootkits," software that facilitates privileged access to a computer while evading detection. The HBGary chief executive officer never went to college and learned his trade on the fly, spending time with other hackers and writing his own security software. He co-founded HBGary in 2004, providing corporations with tools to detect, analyze, and combat sophisticated malware attacks from hostile foreign governments. (The firm's name is derived from Hoglund and his two original partners, Shawn Bracken and Jon Gary.) Among the companies HBGary has worked with are Morgan Stanley (MS), Sony (SNE), and Walt Disney (DIS).

Fifteen months ago, Hoglund decided to branch out into a new market and spun off HBGary Federal to perform classified work for the U.S. government. Employees of the subsidiary would have military experience and top security clearances. To run the operation, Hoglund tapped Barr, then an engineer in the Intelligence Systems Division of military contractor Northrop Grumman (NOC). "Aaron has a very high IQ. He's a very smart individual," says Hoglund. "He also has an incredibly good reputation, or he did at the time." In the year after he was hired, Barr had little success building HBGary Federal's business. The firm initially attempted to break into the "incident response" market, selling its spycraft to government agencies so they could shut down leaks and identify cyber-attackers. That field is competitive, and paying work sparse for startups. By October 2010, in the e-mails that later became public, Hoglund warned Barr that HBGary Federal was "out of money and none of the work you had planned has come in." In his reply, Barr agreed. Barr did have one possible lifeline. On Oct. 19, Palantir Technologies, a Palo Alto (Calif.) cyber-security company whose terrorism analysis software is used by the Pentagon and the CIA, reached out to HBGary Federal and another security firm, Virginia-based Berico Technologies, with a tempting offer. Palantir said it had been approached by Hunton & Williams, a century-old firm with ties to the Republican Party and the defense industry. The firm needed investigative services on behalf of a high-profile, deep-pocketed client.

Barr and representatives from the other companies discussed the project via e-mail and visited Hunton & Williams in November to meet with Richard Wyatt, co-head of the firm's litigation group. A person who was at the meeting says Wyatt wore suspenders, smoked a cigar, and propped up his cowboy boots on his desk—a cartoonish vision of a D.C. power broker. But the security professionals were impressed when they learned the identity of the prospective client: the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, which had just backed a wave of successful conservative candidates for Congress. The Chamber, it seemed, had a public-relations problem: Activist organizations such as U.S. ChamberWatch, Velvet Revolution, and Change to Win were accusing it of financial improprieties and using foreign donations for political purposes. The Chamber believed all these grass-roots organizations were working in concert with the surreptitious backing of major unions. According to the e-mails released by Anonymous, Hunton & Williams was already amassing reams of information, including union rosters, and needed expert help in digesting the data. The security firms' mission, should they choose to accept it: Infiltrate the activist groups and their leadership, compile dossiers, and help the law firm "truly understand and eliminate emerging threats that could cause harm to their clients," according to a Team Themis document.

The team's members spent much of November working up their proposal. They highlighted how they would funnel their gleanings through Palantir Technologies' military-grade terrorist-tracking software. "We need to blow these guys away with descriptions of our capabilities," wrote Matthew Steckman, an engineer at Palantir, in one of the e-mails in the published documents. "Make them think that we are Bond, Q, and money penny [sic] all packaged up with a bow." Then there was the matter of price. Such private online espionage was hardly common practice, and there was no industry-standard pay scale. Team Themis landed on $2 million. For that sum, the client would get a "daily intelligence summary," "link diagrams," and "target impact analysis," among other services. Hunton & Williams, on behalf of the Chamber, balked at the price, so the security companies agreed to do a pilot on spec. (The law firm has not commented on the matter.) Hunton & Williams clearly saw potential in Team Themis. On Dec. 2, in a message with the subject line "Urgent: Opportunity," a partner at the firm asked the group to come up with a new plan, this time to combat WikiLeaks on behalf of a different prospective client—Bank of America, which believed WikiLeaks was about to publish a cache of its documents. (The Justice Dept., the e-mails suggested, had recommended that Bank of America hire Hunton & Williams.)

Barr took the lead in crafting what would become an infamous 24-slide PowerPoint presentation that called for a cyber-campaign of disinformation against WikiLeaks. The document analyzes WikiLeaks' server infrastructure, talks about planting news stories about the exposure of its confidential informants, and proposes online attacks. Some of the language is comical, like a verbal version of an old Spy Vs. Spy cartoon from Mad magazine: "Speed is crucial!" blares one slide. "The threat demands a comprehensive analysis capability now." A person familiar with the creation of the presentation said it was the result of late-night brainstorming, and that the security firms knew Bank of America would likely reject the most aggressive tactics.

As with the Chamber of Commerce scheme, the WikiLeaks proposal never got a final hearing. While HBGary Federal and the other security firms awaited a formal go-ahead from Hunton & Williams and its clients, Barr decided to deploy his new research techniques on Anonymous.

Anonymous has had a busy winter. The group, which appears to be less a formal organization than a loose coalition of tech-savvy radicals, attacked government websites in Egypt and Tunisia. It launched denial-of-service attacks on Amazon.com (AMZN), PayPal, MasterCard, and Visa (V) after those companies declined to do business with WikiLeaks. Barrett Brown, an unofficial spokesman for the group, says its goal is "a perpetual revolution across the world that goes on until governments are basically overwhelmed and results in a freer system." Barr had come to believe that companies would have to defend themselves against this anarchic sensibility using the same tactics as the mischief makers. He also believed he had the skills and experience to join the battle. His principal weapon was a method he developed to associate the real identities found in social networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn with the anonymous profiles of hackers. So while Hunton & Williams weighed Team Themis's proposals, and with the ultimate fate of HBGary Federal hanging in the balance, Barr figured the time was right to demonstrate how social networks could yield an intelligence bonanza.

Barr began by hanging out in an online forum called Internet Relay Chat (IRC), using a fake identity. At the same time, on social networks, he "friended" people thought to be senior members of the Anonymous collective. Barr then compared the times that suspected hackers logged into IRC chat rooms anonymously and into their own identifiable social networking accounts. The exposed HBGary e-mails would later reveal that Barr's own employees thought he was overreaching and that they feared retribution from the vengeful Anonymous. But Barr plunged ahead. He proposed a talk at the RSA conference in San Francisco titled "Who Needs NSA when we have Social Media?" Then he promoted the talk by suggesting he would expose the identities of the primary members of the group. On Feb. 4, a Friday, Barr bragged to the Financial Times about his upcoming talk and claimed he had obtained the identities of the group's de facto leaders. Bad idea. As Stephen Colbert summed it up, lampooning the HBGary affair on his TV show, "Anonymous is a hornet's nest. And Barr said, 'I'm gonna stick my penis in that thing.' "
When hackers taunt, they often use the term "pwned"—as in, "I so pwned you, newbie." No one seems to agree where the word came from. Google it, and you'll find claims that it's a corruption of "owned," or that it's from a computer game, or maybe it's just a shortened form of the chess term "pawned." Whatever its origins, the term connotes humiliating domination by another person or group. That's roughly what happened next to Barr, Hoglund, and HBGary. Responding to Barr's public claims, the Anonymous hackers exploited a vulnerability in the software that ran HBGary Federal's website, obtained an encrypted list of the company's user names and passwords, and decoded them. Barr and some of his colleagues, Anonymous then discovered, had committed computer security's biggest sin: They used the same password on multiple accounts. The hackers commandeered Barr's Twitter and LinkedIn accounts, lacing both with obscenities. One of the passwords also opened the company's corporate Google account. Jackpot. In less than 48 hours after Barr's Financial Times interview appeared, the hackers had the keys to the kingdom. They immediately started downloading HBGary's e-mails. All told, Anonymous got hold of 60,000-plus—about 4.7 gigabytes worth, including attachments—and quickly put them all online in conveniently searchable form. The material details online security holes at HBGary clients and prospects such as Sony, Johnson & Johnson (JNJ), Disney, ConocoPhillips (COP), and dozens of others. The e-mails showed that DuPont (DD) was breached in 2009 (by the same hackers who hit Google) and again in late 2010. DuPont employees on a business trip to China even found that their laptops had been implanted with spyware while the hardware was supposedly locked inside a hotel safe.
In the ensuing days, Barr and Leavy, HBGary's president, took to IRC channels to plead with Anonymous for mercy. None was forthcoming. Members of the group and their supporters gleefully defaced and posted photos of Barr, published personal details about his family, tweeted his Social Security number, and generally gloated about pwning a professional adversary. They said the "ninja team" that hacked HBGary included a 16-year-old girl named Kayla. (Rumors online suggest that "Kayla" is actually a 26-year-old man living in New Jersey. Who's right? Not even Anonymous may know.) "We have no choice but to defend ourselves and defend WikiLeaks by these means," says Brown, the unofficial Anonymous spokesman. "This has just begun. We're absolutely at war now."

Meanwhile, the other members of Team Themis deny they wanted to push the operations as far as Barr did—despite the volumes of incriminating e-mails. Palantir Technologies CEO Alex Karp blames HBGary for conceiving the plot, decries any attempt to develop "offensive cyber capabilities," and has placed on leave Steckman, the engineer who coordinated with Team Themis. Palantir also issued a public apology to Glenn Greenwald, a Salon.com journalist who was singled out in a Themis proposal as a WikiLeaks defender and thus a possible target. In a statement, Berico Technologies says it "does not condone or support any effort that proactively targets American firms, organizations, or individuals." At the same time, it cut ties with HBGary. The U.S. Chamber of Commerce said in a press release that it's "incredulous that anyone would attempt to associate such activities with the Chamber," adding that it had not seen the incendiary proposals before they were made public. Morgan Stanley dropped HBGary as a security contractor. Barr never delivered his speech and when he tendered his resignation three weeks after the Anonymous attack, he said he was confident HBGary would be able to "weather this storm." As for Hoglund, even his friends in the security industry wonder how long HBGary can survive amid the onslaught of negative publicity. But the CEO claims his company has undergone a rigorous security review and is back on track. He says the hackers "made a hole-in-one from 200 yards away" and that it will never happen again. "They are nowhere near as sophisticated and scary and large as they would like people to think they are," he says.

And while the lesson of the HBGary saga may be that it's not always easy to tell the black hats from the white hats in the ambiguous game of computer security, Hoglund has no doubt which is which. "It will get worse," he says. "This whole event has only emboldened them. I hope this isn't the way the Internet has to be. Right now it's a domain of lawlessness. This is bigger than HBGary, than my company. Right now, the pendulum has swung way over to the bad guys' side
